"Who the hell did I piss off to become her? The Black Queen?" My words were almost a growl as I gripped the edges of the vanity, the cold metal biting into my fingers.

With dawning horror, Subong stared at the cross’s hollow inside, his heart beginning to beat faster and faster. Distantly, he thought, Oh, right. I just ran out yesterday.
Something on his face dripped down from the ridge of his eyebrow to his cheek; he wasn’t sure if it was blood or sweat. His eyes slid back down towards the body at his feet.
Subong felt like he was suffocating. His cross was empty—it was never empty—and he’d just seen a girl whose hands were shaking get shot in the forehead. His own were beginning to tremble as his shock wore off; if he didn’t pop a pill beforehand, adrenaline had always made him shaky. He took a stuttering breath.
