I honestly believe these two, as semi-permanent partners, are so used to having someone to take shifts with as they sleep that they just continue that pattern at the base.
And, both of them being fucked up enough to join Akatsuki, it makes sense to me that they sort of ended up being each other’s support. You don’t have to know what’s wrong to offer comfort, after all.
