(This is initially a different story of the same name. However, after posting the first chapter, I realized that I didn't like how I arranged the chapters. There were going to be a lot of flashbacks, but it felt rushed and confusing. Now the story will be chronological, with maybe a few smaller flashbacks in later chapters. And the original first chapter will be further down the timeline.

When Dusk awoke aboard a burning ship that smelled of blood and death as heavily as it did smoke and ash, it was without any idea of who they were or how they got there. There’s a blissful moment when that name means nothing to him, when it’s merely a four-letter arrangement referring to an anonymous person behind the kitchen island, pouring bourbon into a cup. A moment when it could be any Nick in the world, other than the one it is.
Then their eyes meet, and Charlie prays it’s too loud for Imogen to hear the gasp that escapes him. His brows are knit in that typical Nick-Nelson furrow, as if everything is a mite too baffling or cruel for him to understand but he doesn’t want to admit it. But otherwise the years have been generous to him. The baby roundness of his nose and cheeks is gone, replaced by smooth planes, and he’s close to bursting out of the tight black shirt he’s wearing.
Charlie’s entire body feels like a paper cut, and staring at Nick Nelson is a steady trickle of rubbing alcohol.
