They slowly learn more about themselves and each other as this goes on and they realize just how similar they are to each other and they're so grateful to know they are not alone. -

Its fingers twitched at its sides, like it wanted to reach out and grab the other. It had one of Evan’s knives clutched in one hand, but the other was free. They’re both stained red; the skin of its borrowed body and the metal of the blade.
”What do you think I did?” They both knew. It didn’t need to say it aloud. It grinned when Vinny asked what it wanted, all sharp teeth, too much so for the form it was currently in.
There was a pause then, another long silence only filled by HABIT’s breathing — Vinny felt like he must’ve been holding his subconsciously while he waited for whatever answer HABIT was going to give. Maybe it wasn’t going to answer at all.
”…You,” it said then, still staring him down. “That’s what I want.”

Vinny saw it in his eyes, a glint of vunerability that wasn’t there before. Desperation. Habit was desperate. Desperate for anything, anyone different. He was practically rutting against Vinny's leg for change.
This fic takes place between The Day the World Ended and All Good Things because -pushes up glasses and points to my elaborate EMH timeline board that's covered with red string, post it notes, and purple duct tape- as you can see here under figure A, it's the only time Habit would've ever allowed himself to get slutted out. Looking in the mirror and seeing what could exist in the negative space, if only you knew what changes to make. Being afraid of both the thing that you are and the thing that sits secretly inside of you.
It's just that before, the thing that sat secretly inside of Evan wasn't a murderous people-eating demon and he had agency over his own transformation. Oh, yeah, and he'd wake up with all of his limbs intact.

Vinny's never loved the same way other people do, but he loves Evan. He's loved Evan through horrors and heartbreaks and Evan starting a family -- tried to move on, and he even has a dead ex-girlfriend to prove it. But now he has a version who looks at him the same way, and all he has to put up with is stuff he might have asked for anyway. With this version, the both of them might stand a chance at becoming something like whole.
Or; Habit is a shiny new toy, one that Vinny's managed to collar and claim without anybody noticing, least of all Habit himself.
