He stood frozen as May screamed, Maddie’s raised voice sounding over the phone, as sirens finally echoed close by. Too late. The blood is on his skin.
With trembling fingers, he wipes at his cheek, just smearing red across his skin. It’s everywhere. It’s all over his clothes, his skin, staining his fingernails.
