Alastair had been going through a really difficult time. There was everything that had happened with his father; the arrest, his release, returning to the family late, still being an alcoholic and then Elias Carstairs had been murdered. Alastair’s mother was expecting and now on bed rest, his sister had fled the country with her husband’s parabati and Alastair had broken his own heart by turning down Thomas Lightwood, despite how things had gone when they’d been locked in the Sanctuary. Oh, and on top of trying to hold his family together when it was falling apart - Alastair was also with child.

Alastair’s face is right above his when his eyes flutter open, his mouth stretched in a radiant, wide grin.
‘Hello,’ he murmurs, his fingers playing with the hair strewn over Thomas’s forehead. ‘There’s my favourite person.’
‘Here I am,’ Thomas agrees, hearing his voice come out raspy and feeling Alastair’s responding shiver under his hands. ‘And here you are, my heart.’
Alastair leans down and kisses him, and Thomas drowns in the sensation.
But when he pulls away, Thomas opens his eyes and sighs: there’s no Alastair above him, just that same old bedroom ceiling Thomas has become more than familiar with.
A signature at the end of a letter. An epilogue of a novel. The final refrain of a long, epic poem.
