Face lit from above

This photo represents unusual lighting. The light source is coming from the bottom instead of top left which makes it more interesting. This kind of lighting makes the overall picture look creepy. The shadows created on her face add drama. The lighting makes the picture have a creepy and intense meaning which is opposite of what it would be if the light source was from above.

Dramatic overhead lighting

People instinctively like light that comes from the top of an image, because it feels natural. We are used to sunlight from above. In this image, I held a light under my face. This creates a creepy look, because it is not natural.

Hera stood by the panoramic window, the sprawling neon-lit city beneath her reflecting against the glass. Above, the moon loomed like a ghostly sentinel, its greenish hue casting an otherworldly glow. Hera knew her time was short—the broadcast was about to begin. Tonight, the resistance would hear her call, the coded message hidden within the blinking lights of the skyline.
