"TAMAHOMEEEE!!" "MIAKAAAA!!" Feelings of any kind towards other characters are best shown by calling each other`s name, loud, REALLY LOUD. For better effect at least twice or thrice. For lover`s couples and mortal enemies it is a requirement to run towards each other while calling each other`s name, unaware of the surroundings. · · dear mother in heavenA form of veneration of ancestors, where people call upon their ancestors for help, advice and similar in their everyday life like in other cultures upon God, Jesus, the Virgin Mary or various saints. The veneration of the spirit`s of one`s ancestors is an integral part of Japanese culture. · · defeat means friendshipIn a series based around an endless series of one-on-one fights, defeating a Worthy Opponent or The Rival will sometimes convert them to the hero`s side, if not always to his cause. · · EngrishEngrish is actually a mispronunciation of English, as can be the result of someone, who does not have English as their primary language of origin (such as Japanese or Chinese). · · faceless background charactersUnimportant random/extra characters that appear mostly as part of the background are often drawn without much facial details, normally to save money, effort and manpower for more important parts of the show. Sometimes, they have almost or no facial details, meaning their heads only have indications of the presence of parts such as hair or mouth, or not even that. This can go as far as only drawing an abstracted silhouette of the whole body. · · god is a girlIn storylines where many or all gods are portrayed as goddesses (female gods), "The God of all Gods", or the Number-One-God so to speak, is also female. In other instances, such may just refer to a girl with god-like powers. · · grail in the garbageIt`s an artifact of earth-shaking power. Its value is immeasurable, its history is the stuff of legends. It`s... being offered at a clearance price at the local discount store. (e.g. Chii in Chobits, Saito`s sword in Zero no Tsukaima) · · guns are uselessGuns are about as effective as throwing tissue while only manly things like swords, spears, and bare fists are of any use at all. · · heroic sacrifice"In order to save the many, the few will need to sacrifice their lives..." or so this character may think. In a seemingly hopeless situation, against impossible odds, the character does not choose the path of the coward and run, he or she chooses to bravely face the enemy, fully aware that this will mean death. · · imperial stormtrooper marksmanship academyWhen only the Bad Guys suffer from A-Team Firing. Also called The Principle of Evil Marksmanship. The good guys (the non-Red Shirt ones, at least - and sometimes even them, too) can stand in the middle of the firefight and never get hit, and can pick off any bad guy with even the most casually-aimed shot while the bad guys seem unable to hit the broad side of a barn. · · important haircutWhen a character cuts off his or her hair, it often symbolizes a rite of passage or bout of character growth. A princess striking out on an adventure, or a new recruit at boot camp, for instance. Hair is something that takes time and effort to grow, so parting with it voluntarily can be a powerful act. · · inter-dimensional schoolgirlOne, or more, schoolgirls cross through time, space or some dimension using a space-warp-magic-portal-wormhole-singularity-thing to save one, or more, worlds, or planets. A major twist could be that the schoolgirl might originate from that very magic-futuristic world, bearing one great secret legendary power to defeat one big bad legendary foe. The return back home is the leitmotiv of the whole series. · · just as plannedA term usually used to describe a situation, where a seemingly smart and cunning villain sets up a plan that seems grand and impressive, but is actually long winding, ridiculous, and convoluted. And all of that just to trick his opponent(s), like the hero or anybody else, into doing things exactly as he planned. Suffice to say that the villain could have reached his goal by much shorter and easier means, it just wouldn`t seem as awesome anymore. · · lost technologyAny advanced technology or science-related knowledge that was lost for some reason fits the description. This could be technology from a time before a post-apocalyptic cataclysm, knowledge gained a long time ago but forgotten, or the relics of an old alien civilization only recently discovered. · · mundane made awesomeBy adding exaggerated expressions and gestures, excessive intonation, lighting, slow motion, griping orchestral music, or ominous Latin chanting, everyday mundane events can be made awesome! · · philosopher`s stoneThe philosopher`s stone, reputed to be hard as stone and malleable as wax, is a legendary alchemical tool, supposedly capable of turning base metals into gold; it was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. · · power gives you wingsIt is not Red Bull that gives you wings, but power, most often even the power of love. Once they start powering up and become REALLY powerful, it will be indicated by them getting a pair of wings. Specifically, feathery white angelic wings, sometimes also wings made of Hard Light or Pure Energy. · · red ones go fasterWhen a character is only faster, stronger, better, cause s/he`s making liberal use of the color red on his/her equipment or on herself/himself. · · show within a showA fictional TV (or radio, or stage) show that takes place within an actual TV show; or, occasionally, a fictional instalment or incarnation of an actual show. Many comedies have short one-off gags where they parody existing shows. Example: A large part of Martian Successor Nadesico is centred around the fictional popular anime Gekigangar III, which is being watched by several characters of the Nadesico crew. · · sibling yin yangIn real life, siblings hardly ever act the same. Fiction sometimes takes this to an extreme. Enter Sibling Yin Yang, the occurrence of siblings that are nearly polar opposites. If he`s cool and reckless, she`s responsible and thoughtful. If she`s a spiky-haired hooligan, he`s the nerdy wimpy one. If he`s an immature brat, she`s... well, you get the picture. · · space is an oceanThe difference between space and ocean is marginal. In fact the two are completely interchangeable. Spacecraft are usually called ships and space forces use naval ranks. Movement in space is two-dimensional. There is friction. And not to forget space pirates are roaming through the galaxy and just so often you will encounter space whales. Some titles take this even a step further by actually displaying the space as a sort of gigantic liquid mass. · · there can be only oneThe long-term plot of the program revolves around a group of characters whose numbers are being slowly whittled away by one means or another, usually by killing each other. In the case of some reality shows, this is a process of elimination intended to result in a single winner. · · Tokyo is the centre of the universeWhether it`s the big bad evil aiming for world domination, demons bringing the hell over to this site or aliens attacking the Earth, their centre of attention is always Tokyo, as if the rest of the world did not even exist! But worry not if you happen to live there, because your neighbour could just be the leader of a senshi team or the pilot of a giant mecha and they are surely going to save the day again. · · trapped in the body of a childFor some reason, a character in this anime who is a late-teenager or an adult, has their mind trapped in the body of a child. E.g. a former late teenager or an adult is transformed into a child. This can be the result of magic, science, or otherwise. · · under one roofFor some reason or another, the main protagonist (e.g. male in harem / female in reverse-harem) is living together with many other characters of the opposite-gender, all under the same roof (in the same dwelling unit). · · visible auraCharacters are surrounded by a visible energy field usually representing inner strength, but not restricted to only that. · · visiting alien superheroSometimes, the Earth does not have enough of its own Defenders of Justice. In such cases, a "Gastarbeiter" hero from a foreign planet or world has to appear to save the day. · · wardrobe limited to school uniformThe main characters only wear school uniforms, even though other clothes would be more appropriate. Example: Kagome in Inu Yasha, wears her uniform in Inu Yasha`s world, although she is shown to own other clothes at home. · · zero to heroWith his first appearance, this character is getting his ass kicked by nearly everyone, but as the plot continues, through training (mental or physical) or instant power-up, he changes into a killing/fighting/winning machine. The best example: Makunouchi Ippo from Hajime no Ippo series.
