Gintama, for all intensive purposes, is simply a parody of Shounen anime/manga - much like DBZ. Which is in a sense what makes them so fantastic. But I do agree with you yahtat in that if Gintama was able to score over a 9, there should be no reason why One Piece cant. One Piece characters all seem to have a connection and Oda, being the crazy genius he is, always seems to find a way to tie them into the greater picture. He also does it so perfectly and seamlessly that one cannot simply watch One Piece without being in total awe of its calculated beauty, if you enjoyed it that is . Gintama being the parody it is can not and does not go into the amount of detail One Piece has (or has the potential for).
Yup, exactly=) I have always feel one piece is underrated. Perhaps this is because some people find it too long, some parts too kiddy and draggy, or it wasn't what they are looking for in an anime. One Piece is definitely not flawless. It may not have the best comedy, best fighting scene, parody, best character, suspense, and it has no romance or whatsoever. However, to be able to have above average comedy, action, characters, storyline and combine nicely whatever aspects that makes an anime good, no matter how objectively I look at one piece, I still think it worth a slightly higher rating. I have seen most of the high rating animes in anidb, and I still don't agree with the substantial gup in rating between one piece and those animes. Personal opinion of one piece rating:at least around 8.8=)
