It's SUPERBLY fun death game series with great MC, tho ofc don't expect much for quality writing. Definitely a big recommendation for fans of competitive/death game series.
A lot of the "convenient" plot devices are well placed early on, and the rules are established to avoid cheap plots. So in the end, the characters involved are doing everything with whatever toolset at hand.
But the biggest distinction in the end is that everything is kept simplistic, but the result/actions are all open-ended. This is different from other "psychological game" series where they try to make simple stuff too complex.
