Cartaphilus was the person that apparently threw a rock at the Son of God and got cursed for it. That curse was the one of immortality, followed by constant pain and rotting body. Joseph tried to help him out after he took him into his home, but eventually his efforts drove him into desperation and he merged with him afterwards, resulting in his current state.
