Broke after 5 months and can not charge

Broke after 5 months and can not charge
*Edit If you want to read my experience continue, if you want to skip to my advice about getting this charger skip to the last paragraph. So after 5 months of operation the charger now displays a red light on the side and wont charge. App says that I can charge but when connected to my EV it does not provide power to it. I walked through the trouble shooting which is pretty much a joke as there is not much you can do besides reboot the charger using the app or power cycle. So I followed those steps and none of them worked. Which after the troubleshooting says to call support. This is where the real issue starts. I call support and they immediately think I am calling about one of there outside stations so I then needed to explain that it was a home charger. After clearing that up they have walk through the same steps as the apps troubleshooting guide. After that they say they need to escalate the ticket and have someone come take a look. Which sounds great except that the customer service representative doesn't know when they will contact me and they can not provide me the ticket number because that gets sent to the level 2 rep and they don't have access to it. After which the person tells me that they will contact me with in 3 to 4 days and if they don't then to call back. Which I am like what the kind of support is this.So here I am now at the 4th day and no contact and not able to charge. Luckily I have my backup charger but that is on 120v but for 500 dollars I would hope for two things. 1) it better work longer than a year and 2) the support needs to be on point. Now I am sure other people will say they have had no issue but how a company handles the customer that do speaks volumes and right now I can say as that customer go with the manufacturers charger if they have one.I mean I wasn't even offered credit to go charge at one of their stations as a way of customer appreciation.I will keep this updated with the results I get but it has not been going well being without a fast charger at home for almost a week.Edit* So far charger has not worked for 9 days and received no call from support to take care of the issue. Monday was a holiday so that pushed getting help until Tuesday and also sucked because of all the additional driving. So after contacting support again the representative took a look at my account saw all the information about my charger, was able to see a relay was tripped and asked if there was a power surge that happened, there wasn't. Guy kept trying to find some subtle way to point that it was something outside the devices fault. However a relay was tripped which is what it is designed to do for power spikes but it should be able to be reset and that is the issue. So something went wrong there. So now I have to wait for a replacement unit which maybe Saturday and then I have to replace the unit myself which is a hardwire unit that I paid a contractor to install. The support rep did walk me through a little of it but I might have to see about contacting the contractor but will attempt myself first. Yeah make sure to get the plugin that way if an issue happens it is easy to replace which is something that shouldn't happen.I probably wont do another update because this should be resolved after two weeks without a charger. The thing that really irks me is that chargepoint has chargers in my area that they could provide some sort of credit for incase I need to get a quicker charge. The point would be to stand by your product and show some customer loyalty if something happens they got you covered. However both times I called that never happened. My advice go with a plug in unit it will pay off more but might not look as nice but if the unit breaks it is easy to replace. Get the car manufacturer charger if they have one for your car as the wifi, schedule and app features are all sound nice but probably done by your vehicle so really you don't need another thing to handle that.

Works well, reliably pumping over 7.6 kW. WiFi is easy to set up with an app (but it does not like 5G WiFi connections). The charge log that covers both home and public charge sessions is comprehensive. This model is more powerful than public ChargePoint stations which are usually 6.6 kW.

I have noticed that the charger meters the energy pulled from the grid rather than the energy actually delivered into the battery. This means that you need to subtract about 9% from the recorded kilowatt-hours to estimate the amount actually charged up - this accounts for the losses incurred mostly by the car's onboard charger. On the other hand, the reported amount is what the utility company is billing for. This is different from public chargers that appear to show kWh delivered into the battery: a 6.6 kW charger will be shown delivering electricity at 6 kW power. Public chargers seem to report what the car is telling them via the SAE-1772 interface. To convert publicly delivered energy to the energy actually pulled from the grid, the shown amount needs to be adjusted up by about 10%, and then the cost per kWh can be compared with what one is paying at home.

When the charger is not connected to WiFi, it will be lit in white color. It you see this, check your network connection. When it is connected via Wifi, it will change the color to green. When the charger is connected to the car, it lights up blue, and when the charging is in progress, the blue light pulses. All this is very nice because you can check what's going on by just taking a look across the garage - no tiny LEDs to decider in the dark and up close.

With the ChargePoint app on your phone you can monitor the charging progress from anywhere - in the house or across the globe.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the ChargePoint 32A EV charger. I was evaluating the ChargePoint vs a non-wifi enabled brand, which was highly rated and slightly cheaper, as I didn't see the need for wifi on a charger (after all, my car can determine charging schedule, etc.). I ended up with the charge point, as it was on sale on EV day, and with free prime delivery ended up being less expensive than the non-wifi brand.

I've now changed my mind about wifi. The 2 features that I appreciate the most about wifi and the connected app are:
      (1) the ability to disable the charger on a schedule -- we think of this as "scheduling charging" but what it really means is that when I'm not home, my externally mounted charger can't be used by someone; while the risk of that is frankly low, it's a nice insurance policy to have.
      (2) the ability to input your utilities' rate schedule and see the total cost of your charging.

The unit is stylish. My only complaints are (1) cord management -- I still haven't figured out how to easily hang the cord without it looking like a jumbled mess (2) the app records 'total time plugged in' as charging time; I find this a bit misleading, as if my car takes 4 hours to charge, but I've left it plugged in for 8 hours, it shows 8-hours as charging time. I've sent a request to ChargePoint and they've logged it as a feature request.

All-in-all, it's a nice stylish charger, was installed easily by my electrician, and the wifi is much more useful than I initially imagined.

This unit did what it was supposed to do, charge our car. Nothing special that separates it from other chargers. After just over 3 years of use it developed a fault. Support could not fix it as it is a hardware issue. Warranty is only 3 years. ChargePoint offers no solution except to buy another $750 charger. Stay away, find a cheaper option, it’s a better deal in the short term and the long run.

This review is the for hardwired 32 amp Home Charger with a 25' cord (since Amazon just loves to combine similar products). If you have a basic understanding of and comfort level with electrical wiring, running conduit and pulling cables, you can install this unit. If you don't understand the difference between a 120 line with a hot/neutral and a 240 line with 2 hots, I suggest you hire an electrician.

I installed this unit using 10 gauge stranded hots, a solid 10 gauge ground, 3/4 inch flexible PVC conduit and water tight connections. However you choose to install it, make sure your conduit and connectors are rated for a wet location (assuming that it is being installed outdoors). I had originally intended to mount the unit under the house (in the foundation area), then run the cord through an external wall. The reasoning behind this is that I didn't want this unit to be a target for thieves, given that it costs over $600 with tax. However, the connector on the unit side of the charging cable is rather large, and would have required a very large hole in the wall, most of which would subsequently have to be sealed with silicone. Thus, I ended up mounting it outside, requiring only a 1” hole to accommodate the 3/4" conduit.

Having mounted the unit outside, I thought the 25' cord would be overkill. However, it is just right for my application, which requires the cord to go down to the ground, underneath a small gate, over to the car, then up to the charging port. Thus, unless your car is in very close proximity to the unit, I suggest spending the extra money on the 25' cord.

The ChargePoint software runs on my Android phone and my Wife's iPhone without a problem. The app is not ideal, but certainly functional and without obvious bugs. You can also access the unit via a web browser. Alexa integration seems good, but I don't really use it. Moreover, I only use the ChargePoint software/website for charge monitoring and power consumption information. I have yet to use the scheduling feature, but will probably do so in the summer months, when there is a significant difference between peak and off-peak hours for electricity consumption.

There are other chargers on the market which are probably just as good that will cost you a bit less. I went with ChargePoint mainly due to reputation and their large market share in the industry (there are lots of commercial ChargePoint stations out in the field).

If there is a possibility that you may need to use your unit outside (e.g., you plan to install it in a garage, but may later move your residence to a place where this is not an option), I suggest getting the hardwired unit. The hardwired unit is the only one that is rated for outdoor use, but it can be used indoors as well. If you have a 240 volt outlet and don't want to run new wires from your panel, just rig it up to a 240 plug and plug it into the receptacle. Again, this should be relatively easy for DIY types, but something to avoid if you're not comfortable with electrical wiring.

Nice little charger. Install easy, guide sufficient. We needed electrician to run new line from house - all the work went there, the charger itself is easy. Installed internet booster so we could network the station (it is in carport, booster was $150) and its really great to have all the charging data, costs etc at your fingertips, including trend analysis. Nice, fast charge. Very happy with purchase and with equipment.

Charging station is working great without single issue.
Installation and connecting to internet was very easy.
Do not use GFCI breaker with it though. It will trip.
App is also working good with it and is reliable but it is missing few obvious options that would make it even better. There is no way in app to manually turn off charging, app only uses miles for distances and there are few more things that could be added as well.

I did not expect to be giving this anything but a glowing review, but the reality of ownership isn’t quite a rosy as I had hoped. About a month ago, our Pacifica Hybrid began to refuse to charge from this charger. At first we thought it was the car, but then we plugged in a Nissan Leaf... same problem. Car refuses to charge (error indicated on the blue dash lights). The CP charger on the other hand is not reporting any faults... this was really disappointing. It seems this is nothing more than a wifi enabled outlet, it has no diagnostic capability. CP Customer service was friendly, but not able to make heads or tails of the problem (even after logging into the charger directly). It’s been over a week now and the replacement has yet to ship... the Pacifica is fine, but the Leaf is useless.

I’m really disappointed in the product and the lack of urgency displayed by CP. I would not recommend this product or the company making it. They still have some growing up to do, both in engineering, and in understanding their customers needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars I particularly like the Wi-Fi and app features of the charger
Reviewed in Canada on January 10, 2018
Despite Amazon delivery delays (to their credit they did refund what I paid for the "guaranteed Friday delivery", but I had to cancel my electrician and charge at 120V for the first weekend with my new car), I am very happy with my ChargePoint charger. It's fast, and the cord does indeed stay flexible at -30 as noted by the previous reviewer. The Wi-Fi connection and app give a detailed record of any charging done with the unit and, as I understand it, any other ChargePoint public-access charger (though I haven't tried one yet). The app allows me to easily calculate my per kilometre cost (~ 2.9 cents vs. 10.3 cents for our Passat, calculated at $1.05/litre).

The charger downloads Hydro One time-of-day rates and uses them to calculate your cost per charge. It can be programmed to only charge at the lowest (ie., overnight and weekend) rates, which would be handy if your EV doesn't support such timing itself.

As pointed out below, the length of charge time is connected time after charging starts, but the app does include a graph for each charge showing the charging time, the kilowatts used throughout the charge and the total kWh added.

My only regret is not buying the 25 foot cord, but it was out of stock when I ordered the charger and the new car delivery was only days away.
