Creating Accessible Content
The University is committed to providing accessible information in all forms.
Electronic accessibility is a legal requirement, and is the responsibility of all faculty and staff on our campus.
UNC Charlotte is committed to ensuring that information is provided in an accessible format. When developing information consider how individuals with disabilities will be able to access the information. Electronic and paper-based information should be available in accessible formats for individuals with disabilities. For more information about building accessible websites contact the Assistive Technology Specialist in the Office of Disability Services.
The following tools help identify basic accessibility issues with websites, including why something is not accessible, and how to fix it:
-
The UDOIT Accessibility Checker in Canvas helps faculty optimize courses for students with disabilities.
WAVE is a suite of evaluation tools that helps authors make their web content more accessible to individuals with disabilities.
-
The WAVE tool video explains the basics of WAVE (web accessibility evaluation tool).
-
One way to make paper-based information, such as brochures and fliers, accessible for individuals with disabilities is to post them electronically on the website, AND in an accessible format. There are clear guidelines for making electronic information accessible following Section 508 Guidelines. If information is needed in Braille format, contact the Office of Disability Services for assistance.
