Best way to migrate from IPB

Hi, we are still on IPB 3.4 and I'm looking for an advice what is the best way to migrate to XF. Particulary we are waiting for XF 3, but could start the migration process earlier. We need to save as much forum data as possible.

Do we need to find a dev with a custom importer script for a complete migration or the standart XF importer is enough?

What data will be lost in any case due to incompatibilities?

Which way is better in terms of saving data:
IPB 3 => IPS 4 => XF 2
or
IPB 3 => XF 1.5 => XF 2
?

Thanks

Our importer will import from 4.x so if you can upgrade to that version you can just go that route.

All standard content will be imported, such as members, forums, threads, posts, etc.

@Slavik knows how to do this. Ask him. Otherwise do what paul b just suggested.

Hi Paul, I noticed that the IPB -> IPS -> XF route requres to convert our database to utf8mb4, but we'd like to stay with utf8_general. Does XenForo require utf8mb4?

I'm not sure why, but my recent posts including bug reports and questions were deleted. Maybe I should start a new thread in this forum category for each question or new thread for each bug report?

I was waiting for 3.0 but then those news about 2.4 instead of 3.0 made me think it is going to be much longer than expected. If the final release of IPS 5.0 comes out before XF 2.4, then we will migrate to them. Unfortunately for us here, where I live, we do not live in a slow and peaceful world anymore, and my users risk to not see anything new if wait for too long. There is nothing wrong with XF, my admins loved it so much for speed and advanced permission system. Just my considerations about the future.

Stick with xf

You'll love it because you won't have to part with 6 monthly memberships that invision has.
it is $199 for a year for all their product offerings.
xenforo is $100.
from my reviewing you get more with invision full package than xenforo.
the thing that i worry more about is what tracy has commented to me when i mentioned maybe changing.
and that is they may not offer long term self hosted where xenforo is more likely to.
if all you want is a forum then xenforo is cheaper.

But very soon (some weeks) there is IP 5, it s Beta Testing ....Why XenForo? Invision Community V5 is fantastic. I have XF and IP....
We wanted to switch to XF about 10 years ago, but something was off so we made a responsive IPB theme instead. I agree with you, v5 looks fantastic, I took a part in their alpha testing. Their team seems nice as well. Both XF and IPS have their unique advantages and I decided to take the factor of time in the first place.
