Criss Cross Stars

Image
Criss Cross Stars 60 x 73 inches Quilt of Valor #239 Criss Cross is a twin to an earlier QOV  ( Sixteen-Patch Lattice ). Both quilts were started in April when I travelled to Denver to sew with Marilyn, my sister.  This quilt was stalled for a couple of months and taunted me from the design wall. I finally finished it in late July. Hopefully, it will be presented to a veteran in November at the Eppson Center veteran appreciation event.  Update : October 2023 - Criss Cross Stars was lost by the USPS                July 2024 -  Criss Cross Stars  was returned by Nerstrand United Methodist Church (MN) after it                                    was donated to their group

Sewing Up a Storm

Image
snowy morning April 22, 2023 Centennial, CO Snow days make for wonderful sewing days. I’m at Marilyn’s house this week for a Sisters’ Quilting Retreat. I’m working on some Quilt of Valor kits I prepared a couple of weeks ago, and Marilyn is working on an on-going project.  trimming half-square triangles for star points I prepared five kits to work on while I’m here, but I don’t think I’ll need all of them. I also have my knitting with me and work on it in the evening.

Time Away

rugged mountains surrounded the house and outbuildings  September 2021 I spent last week at my nephew’s house with my sister and brother-in-law. Marilyn and I packed sewing machines, fabric and all the essentials for a quilting retreat, and her husband was our cook. My nephew is a ranch manager, and he graciously let us invade and set up shop in his home.  The ranch is somewhat isolated, and the landscape is rugged: the mountains are practically solid rock. Dwight’s horse and border collie are essential in helping him gather and monitor cattle scattered hither and yon on the ranch.  The ranch also has a small flock of hair sheep that do not require shearing, as they shed their wooly covering. I was not aware such breeds existed and discovered they are raised for meat and for their hides.  I snapped a photo through the window as the sheep munched on the grass and weeds behind the house. You can see some still have remnants of their “wool” attached to their backs...

Snowy Retreat

Image
Cinde P. plans a Fiber Retreat at Togwotee Lodge twice a year when the Lodge is officially closed (between seasons) in November and April. This year's November retreat was Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I considered going to the retreat in the past, but life always seemed to get in the way. Sue asked me a couple of weeks ago if I wanted to go with her for just the day - Saturday. I agreed. WYDOT webcam of Togwotee Pass Friday, November 4, 2017 Then Thursday it began to snow in the mountains, it continued to snow on Friday, and on Saturday, the snow was still falling.  The roads looked pretty dicey on the WYDOT webcams and. . . Togwotee Mountain Lodge webcam Thursday, November 3, 2017 the webcam at the Lodge didn't look any better.  I've lived in Wyoming nearly all my life and have driven in some nasty conditions during the winter, so I tend to avoid being out on the roads when they look like this. The weather report for Saturday predicted even more snow on th...

Simple Blocks

Image
a stack of sixty-three simple blocks April 2017 Marilyn and I recently had another sister's sewing retreat. I prepared several sewing projects, and I raided my 2.5 inch strip bin to make these simple red, blue, and neutral blocks. source of free pattern I plan to make the Purple Daze quilt (link for free pattern is under the image), using the silent auction eagle napkins in place of the stars.
