Rabies Spotlight
Rabies is a deadly virus that is most often spread by the bite of a rabid animal. While rabies is preventable, nearly 70,000 people die from the disease around the world each year. Safe and effective vaccines are available to reduce the impact of human and animal rabies and help prevent the disease in animals. Rabies prevention efforts by veterinary, wildlife management, and public health professionals mean that human cases of rabies in the US are rare. However, the risk from US wildlife is still a significant public health threat in all states except Hawaii, and 60,000 people are treated for a rabies exposure each year. In Africa, Asia, and specific areas of Central and South America, rabies in dogs is still a major problem and many communities lack access to preventive human vaccines after they are bitten by a rabid animal.
