Hey guys,

I turn 18 in October (scary) and at that time I will have one more year of online community college before I transfer to a four year college.

Anyway, my oldest sister and her husband (both 26) have been kind enough to offer me a place to stay when I’m 18 to get away from my toxic and abusive parents.

I’m going to be honest, I’m kind of scared of the backlash that I will receive from this considering my oldest sister ran off at 18 and now my parents spread lies about her being awful. I don’t want lies to be spread about me either but I can’t stand living in this house anymore.

Im not worried about college tuition because my parents weren’t going to pay it anyway. My parents were also going to make me rehome my pets I’ve had for several years once I went to college because they don’t want to care for them.

Also, I’ve bought almost everything that I own, but can my parents stop me from taking my bed (I’ll most likely need it cause my sister and her husband are buying a house and moving from an apartment), my desk, and my dresser? Can they take my dog, Remus? My mom is the one that adopted him from the shelter, but I own him.

Does anyone have any advice? Any support? Any comments?

On the day you leave, show up with a uhaul/whatever and just start packing stuff up. Decide beforehand which things are worth fighting over. (Fight for your dog obvy, but is the desk(or whatever) worth it? What can you afford to lose?) Negotiate from there.

Also, make sure you have people on your side. Have friends, your sister's friends, anyone help out. Keep witnesses present. Have them record if a fight breaks out.

As for the rumors, unfortunately, those are going to happen. It sucks. It hurts. It will haunt you.

But it is 100000000000000000000% worth it. Removing yourself from the bad situation is so much more important than your family's opinion of you. If they are so easily swayed by rumors, they don't deserve you anyway. Get out of there.

I can't promise that your situation will be anything like mine, but I swear, you won't be alone. And I'm always here too, if you need to talk. Good luck
