The Reök Palace in Szeged, Hungary was built in 1907 following a bold design by the 29-year-old locally born architect Ede Magyar who was exposed to the Art Nouveau movement in Paris and Brussels. It was the first major commission of his career. The mansion is the finest embodiment of distinctly Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture, and it is the only example outside of Budapest.

The palace was built as a residential and commercial building for Iván Reök, a wealthy hydraulic engineer and Member of Parliament. In addition to his own residence, Reök requested a studio apartment on each floor for his two sons and two larger apartments for his daughters. The other apartments were occupied by military officers, university professors, and other respected citizens of Szeged.

Ede Magyar is sometimes referred to as The Hungarian Gaudi because his work resembles that of the well-known Catalan architect, but his designs were truly unique. Sadly, he died after shooting himself at the age of 35.
