[id: the image is of a horizontally striped flag consisting of 8 stripes and an overlay. the top stripe is offwhite, and has a decorative border of thin white horizontal double lines that are on top of the offwhite stripe. the next stripe is a pale grayish beige, then there's a warm gray stripe. in the middle of the flag a thin white horizontal line is overlayed, which overlaps the 4th and 5th stripes somewhat. in the center of the flag, a white crescent moon shape is also overlayed, and on the right and left edges of the flag, there's a medium half-star on either end. on top of the white stripe and center graphic, there's a drawing of two postcards. the 4th stripe is a desaturated red, then there is a desaturated golden yellow, then finally a medium blue stripe which once again has the same white border overlay that's also on the top edge of the flag.]

In Berlin, many symbols of the former East Germany have been erased. Some traces remain. I photographed their absence and spoke to passersby. I replaced the missing monuments with the memories they left behind.
