Shaun Hetty

18 - he/him - Irish mermaid

Shaun is an 18 year old Marine Biology student from Dublin in Ireland. He's also a mermaid. (Quick note on mermaids: being a type of faerie, they're capable of disguising as mortal.) Shaun lives a regular human life, though he does still have to make frequent trips to the ocean. Luckily, he's in the right college course for that! Shaun is generally obsessed with the ocean and the life it holds, and will go on for hours about facts about it if prompted.

At the moment, he lives with his longtime best friends Conan Aderinsayo and Darragh O'Kane. They're dating, which Shaun doesn't have a problem with - it doesn't mean they're any less close. They all love each other, in a way. Even if Conan and Darragh exist together, they're a package deal. Shaun is aroace, and has no real interest in dating (though he wouldn't mind if he found someone who'd want to.) They all met when they were kids at GAA Summer Camp (Gaelic Games- Gaelic football and hurling). Ever since, they'd grown up together, always inseperable. They're well aware of him being a mermaid, and Conan often agrees to come with him to go for dips in lakes or the ocean to race him (Shaun enjoys letting him win).

Shaun was born on the 22nd of February 2005, out in the middle of the Baltic sea. He was part of a small nomadic school of mermaids, a runt of the litter of sorts, much smaller and with a far less powerful tail than the rest of them. They never seemed to like him, and he was frequently left out. When he was around three years old, he was abandoned while they slept, and, in his panic to try fend for himself in the weeks following, he was hooked and reeled in by a group of deep sea fishermen.

One of these fishermen was John Hetty, his father, who was just after returning to work after suffering the loss of one child, and the news his wife was more than likely incapable of having another. Considering this hybrid child a gift from God, he took him in, and he and his wife, Aisling, raised Shaun as their own. Though he did have some minor developmental delays due to being. A fish. He managed to start primary school at the age of 5, eventually being diagnosed with ADHD and Dyslexia. Darragh and him became closer due to being in the same special education class in secondary school.

Other than marine biology, Shaun's interests include The Two Johnnies, hurling, and music. He tends to hide the last one, since he finds it a little embarrassing, though he was taught to play the fiddle at a young age, and is pretty talented. Darragh is making a concerted effort to try and convince him to be more outgoing, and to Not Just Talk About Fish And Then Disappear at parties. So far, he's been unsuccessful.
