A lot of people are (very fairly) criticizing Murderbot's appearance in the new live action look-- BUT some of these people are also saying that it's inaccurate because it looks "too human" whereas in the books people instantly recognize it as a SecUnit. And I just want to gently point out that there's a really big point made about the fact that only the people who have been around SecUnits before and therefore have an ingrained association with their appearance (in particular people from the Corporate Rim) instantly recognize Murderbot for what it is. Otherwise it's able to pass as a generic enhanced human in front of people who have never met one. What actually gives it away to anyone is that it MOVES and ACTS like a nonhuman. The appearance changes ART did were meant to conceal SecUnit's identity from the average person who had interacted with SecUnits before or seen them in media, and it goes to show how identical and recognizable they all must be that just growing out its hair by like an inch, smoothing out its joints, and becoming 2cm shorter was almost a completely effective disguise.

Am I the only one who likes the casting of Murderbot? I feel like *generic attractive white man* is what would come out if a corporation made synthetic people. They said the ONLY difference between them and a sexbot is literally having genitals, so I figured corporations wouldn’t bother making new faces/bodies. It is disappointing it’s not a POC but I don’t think it’s THAT bad a choice. He honestly can be pretty funny, and the rest of the cast seem to be as described. I feel like we should at least wait til a trailer to be so judgmental.

They let Tommy Arnold design it’s armor! (He’s the cover artist for the books)

I actually really like this armor - especially that it's appropriately grimy and worn. I've seen a lot of people complaining about the helmet design, but I think it's really neat - it goes toward explaining how its clients would think it didn't have a face. Like, it doesn't look like a person wearing a visor helmet to see out of. It looks like a robot.

this is my new obsession and y'all have to deal with it!! (if y'all want to see a character-specific post or just more of a certain character lmk and i'll do it! i am for the people.)

i'm genuinely having so much fun writing a jock protagonist. can't believe i never tried this before. all these years i've been limiting myself needlessly

i've created an extremely elaborate magic system based on linear algebra and not once does the narrator ever explain how it works. he doesn't know. he doesn't care. that's nerd shit. he is going on a lad's night out and if you try to tell him anything about equations he'll put his fingers in his ears and go "lalalala"

i feel it's important to add that my other protagonist is an academic and does know how the magic system works, but he doesn't get a POV chapter until halfway through the story. which means that over the course of 40,000 words we gradually build up a solid working idea of this world and its laws, as understood by Jock Protagonist - and then it switches to Nerd Protagonist, who's like, "just so we're clear, he was wrong about basically all of that."

This is genius

Who else is getting spammed with the latest generation of "I'd like to make art for your fic" comment on AO3 that turns into a relentless attempt to get your e-mail or Discord contact information?

I'm on round #3, and AO3 definitely recognizes this rigmarole as spam -- probably intended to get financial information using some excuse like a commission. It screams AI. The comments now come from Registered User accounts, and Instead of leading with an offer of art like the previous generation of guest comments, they reference some element of the fic like a character's name. If you reply, then you get the art come-on and the request to talk on e-mail or Discord; the first time, I suggested a Tumblr DM, and the reply just pushed again for the same contact info without any link to the presumed "artist's" work or other details you'd expect.

AO3 circulated a Tumblr post about the first generation of this crap, but I have not yet seen an update. If you get a fawning, generic comment from an unfamiliar Registered User that feels a little off-kilter -- as if they didn't actually read the fic -- click on the username before replying, especially if it ends in a string of numbers. You're likely to find a recently established account with no works, bookmarks, or other profile details -- just a name and maybe an avi. And if you've answered a comment from a new "reader" out of courtesy and promptly get the push to send your contact info, DON'T interact further. You can ignore the comment and AO3's spam detectors seem to track it down within a day, or you can file an abuse report.

I hate talking to robots when I call my doctor, my Internet provider or my power company, but I *really* hate having them try to fish me for personal information on AO3. Be alert and stay safe out there.

So because all of my fics are locked, none. Only verified users can comment. Which is great, and I definitely recommend that for anyone who posts to AO3.

However (and funnily enough) I have been getting those comments on ff.net. Which, to be clear, I have not even used since high school when I realized AO3 was a thing. It's so incredibly outdated and I don't know how many users are still actively posting on that site, but it absolutely baffles me to see phishing scams on a website like fanfiction.net, because that almost seems like baiting a hook and throwing it into the fucking public pool during off season hoping to get a bite.

[ID: Martha Wells reading from her book All Systems Red, with robots - mechanical contraptions slightly smaller than most cats, some aerial and some with huge treads - surrounding her, positioned to look like they're listening attentively. Text reads "Martha Wells reading to the search and rescue robots at the TEES (Texas A&M University Engineering Experiment Station) Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR)."]

Can we all take a moment to appreciate this photo from Martha Wells's website
