インタビュアー：イ G.G.佐藤氏：G G：アメリカの打撃コーチって一番朝早くに来て一番最後に帰るの。ずっと見てるの。一向に教えてこない。 イ：コーチですよね？ G：うん。見てるだけ。 イ：見てるだけなんですか？ G：俺打ってんじゃん。「何見てんだよ！仕事しろよ！教えてこいよ！」と思った。 G：ある時タイミングの取り方が分からなくなって、そのコーチに聞きに行ったの。 タイミングの取り方教えて欲しいと。 G：そしたら待ってましたとばかりにアタッシュケースの中からG.G.佐藤の資料、準備万端でもう連続写真とか、『これが良い時、これが悪い時、今こうなってるからこうした方がいい。』と教えてくれたの G：「え、この資料俺が聞きにこなかったら使わなかったの？」て言ったら 『使わない』って 『求めてこない者に対して教えても意味が無いだろう』 と G：そのコーチが良く言ってたのは、『日本人のコーチはもしかしたら選手をコントロールしようとしてるんじゃないか？』 『人をコントロールするのは出来ないんだと。自ら求めない限り行動することはないから、内発的動機づけをいかに生むような関わりをしなきゃいけないんだ』 というのを良く言ってました。 自分で考えさせる文化ですよね。考えた中で分からなくてアドバイスを求めてきた時に指導者はそのアドバイスに答えてあげる っていう「導くリードマネジメント」みたいな感じ。アメリカは。
