James' granny loved how he looked in his school uniform, so a short trousered suit was bought for him. As he grew out of it, he was in need of a replacement suit. β€œOf course, it will have long trousers, being the age I am now”, James thought to himself. He was devastated to find his new suit also had shorts and kneesocks, but not as devastated his granny would have been to see her favourite boy growing up in long trousers. James had no choice, and wore it dutifully. He was then told that it would do for other occasions when smart dress was needed, β€œfor at least a year or two.”

I find the uniform very conducive to life as a student at the academy. It lets people know who I am and where I belong, it gives a sense of community. It is comfortable and smart, it enables me to be relaxed but focussed. The short trousers serve their purpose well - they show I am equal to the girls, and keep me absolutely aware of my status as a boy, which will last another three years until I am 21.

When it is your first date and you put your scout uniform and blue jeans on to be well visible and it works ;)
