I really don't get those who deny original sin because this world is definitely messed up and I don't think that's limited to like natural circumstances and stuff I think there's a lot of human moral error

for the love of god here

denim jacket

leather jacket that is not made of animal skin but also not plastic (wow no way)

Remaining time: 4 days 17 hours

@roach-works

cool i can't wait to wear my human-leather coat around town while doing other totally normal and legal daily activities

SO WHAT'S IT MADE OF OP??? WHAT IS IT.

I need people to understand that all of the "vegan leathers" are plastic. Yes, really all of them. Yes, even that vegan leather that you saw online that prominently claims that it's made of plant waste and is therefore super sustainable.

Cactus leather is "cactus fiber, mixed with various compounds to form a bioresin, which is then poured over a polyester carrier," or, in other words, it's plastic + some cactus material, being deceptively marketed as though it is made entirely from cactus.

Apple leather is "dehydrated apple waste combined with polyurethane," or, in other words, it's plastic + some apple material, being deceptively marketed as though it is made entirely from apples.

Cork leather is "thin sheets of cork which are bonded onto a fabric backing, usually made of polyester, using a polyurethane adhesive" or, in other words, it's plastic + some cork material, being deceptively marketed as though it is made entirely from cork.

Pineapple leather is "pineapple fiber based felt combined with polyurethane," or, in other words, it's plastic + some pineapple material, being deceptively marketed as though it is made entirely from pineapple.

The closest I was able to find to a non-plastic "vegan leather" is mushroom leather, which is made from compressed mushroom mycelium. That compressed mycelium is biodegradable, which is more than you can say about basically anything else on this list, except it's also extremely fragile and falls apart in pretty much any context you'd want to use leather, and so to increase its durability it's usually – you guessed it – combined with polyurethane, which means that while you can make a biodegradable leather-feeling material completely out of mushrooms, almost all of the mushroom leather that you can actually buy is really plastic + some mushroom material, being deceptively marketed as though it is made entirely from mushrooms.

IT'S PLASTIC, FOLKS

IT'S GREENWASHED PLASTIC AND WE ALL NEED TO STOP FALLING FOR IT

Is it ever possible for hatred for another person to be justified?

Short answer, NO. Hating another person is sinful. It gets more complicated when we dive into the other side of hating actions. If you hate what someone does, that's perfectly fine. If you hate someone and their very being, that is not okay.

Throughout all of Scripture we are encouraged (and commanded) to purify our hearts and approach the world with love instead of hate. The only exception to this is that we are told to hate evil. In this context, evil is a lack of goodness. To make it super simple, evil is sin. We are told to hate sin. People are not sin, not even Satan himself is sin.

So you don't hate Elon Musk? Or Donald Trump? It's not ok to hate those people, is what you're saying, correct?

What I'm saying is that someone who claims to be a Christian cannot go to heaven if they have hate in their hearts.

Good thing I'm not a Christian then πŸ‘ you have fun

...why did you ask if you don't actually care

OP didn't make it that clear that they were talking to Christians specifically

As a priest I can safely assume that almost every question that I'll be asked on here will be from a Christian. I'm going to answer them within a Christian context. This post was very very clearly made within a Christian context

did u know it wasn't confirmed that the titanic broke in half until the wreckage was discovered in 1985

@egg2k16

Short answer: dark as hell, and two of the seven testimonies that it sank intact were senior officers

Slightly longer answer, but not as long as I would like because I'm sleepy:

In On A Sea of Glass, they analyze 149 survivor statements (a little under 1/4 of all survivors). 84 people made no mention of the breaking, 58 either said it DID break or overheard people discussing it breaking, and 7 said it did NOT break. One of these seven was Charles Lightroller who was a senior officer ("these boats might buckle/i'll shoot you all like dogs" guy in the movie btw) and he was soooo sure that it sank intact that it overshadowed the majority (which, also, were majority women and children and what would they know about boats etc etc). I've also seen chatter about him having insisted on it because he was trying to save face for White Star Line (if the ship has broken up, that would imply that their ships were built like ass).

Also, a good chunk of those 84 people mentioned specifically the sound, but presumably the reason they didn't mention the breaking is because the lights went out right as it broke up and it was very very dark at 2:15am. I'm not sure HOW dark with the stars and such but between the dark and the chaos I can see why that would happen

I am no expert just an enthusiast but it would have absolutely been inky black after the lights went out as far as i understand it the stars would not have cast any real light and obviously it was a moonless night. Especially since the lights going out and the break up both happened in quick succession so there would not have been much time to adjust your eyes to the darkness, Though the stars would have also allowed one to see the silhouette of the ship.

Don't get me wrong, I'm agnostic, my viewpoint on the universe isn't very "religious" and I don't quite vibe with paganism or a defined spiritual belief system, but I still don't think religion and spirituality is regressive and silly

i took an astrobiology class in school where we read stuff by medieval and early modern scholars debating about whether extraterrestrial life existed and what stuck with me the most about it is how their framework of the universe was expanded by their religious viewpoints.

I mean, I think I was also mind-blown by the fact that people have been talking and writing about aliens for all of recorded history, even before there was any scientific precedent to guess that they could exist.

But that very thing (asking questions without a scientific precedent) was instrumental to proto-scientific thought ever becoming a formalized scientific method. These guys had a baseline for asking questions. So there are these scholars in the 1600's seriously articulating ideas like "So if God created the universe, doesn't that mean it's likely that every planet is inhabited, since it would be created for a purpose?" And "No, no, that doesn't make sense, Jesus would have to come to every planet and die, and that would be messed up." And then "Okay, but what if the people on other planets never sinned?"

And they speculate in great detail about the composition and environment of the other celestial bodies, and it was a real paradigm shift for my mind because of just how little they were working with. They had to debate questions that never occurred to me because I took the foundational knowledge for granted, like "Could the Sun be inhabited?" They thought that maybe if you viewed the Earth from outside, the outer atmosphere would appear bright like the Sun from a distance, so the Sun might be the same "kind" of celestial body as Earth.

I think we often misrepresent the misconceptions of the past tooβ€”the geocentric universe wasn't accepted just because of the Bible, it was also because we hadn't cracked chemistry yet and we didn't know how gravity worked, and our models had to explain why everything seemed to be attracted to the center of the Earth.

And yet, the Earth's circumference was calculated pretty accurately all the way back in Ancient Greece. Pliny the Elder knew that the Earth was a rotating sphere.

I feel like it's easy to take modern knowledge for granted and not appreciate how tirelessly inquisitive and clever the people of the past had to be to figure shit out let alone pass the knowledge along

like, chemistry and biology are fundamentally built from things that aren't directly observable without certain technology that is very difficult to make. We can't directly observe microorganisms using any of our senses. We can't directly observe how chemical elements are different. The guys who first cracked important parts of chemistry did so through stuff like evaporating the solids out of gallons and gallons of human piss.

There's a theory that alien civilizations that can't observe the stars will never develop science because astronomy is thought to have been important on earth for building the fundamentals of scientific thought. Celestial bodies can be observed and understood using math. Humans had to figure out that there WERE consistencies in how the universe works!

"rusalki are by definition no man’s women in this perspective, they are stuck between the maiden-phase and bride-phase forever [...] washing, moistening, and combing of their hair might thus be a symbolic representation of the endless wedding preparation that will never occur"

"a narrative representation of the desperate desire to fulfill the role that was denied to them in a real life."

From "Rusalki: Anthropology of time, death and sexuality in Slavic folklore" by JiΕ™Γ Dynda

maybe controversial but I think philosophy should be included in public school curriculum. obvi ppl who don't know shit about shit will just project their insecurities unto whatever made up image of "teaching philosophy" looks like, but I think it's needed to help tighten up the moral resolve of people and teach them some basic logic. like no I don't think 3rd graders need to read rene descartes, yes I think 3rd graders could benefit from some logic puzzles and age-appropriate moral dilemmas. WHY don't we exclude people from tag at recess, what is the BENEFIT, kids? remember your logic puzzle the other day so you don't fall into one of classic logical fallacies we've been discussing. okay great snack time. etc.
