Stuff about Minneapolis

Hi, I'm Paul and this is just a hodgepodge of stuff about the people, places, and events in and around Minneapolis and the Twin Cities that you may enjoy. Thanks for stopping by!

I have wanted a kitty for forever, but between work, school, and living in a place that was basically wall-to-wall carpet (aka a fur-trap), I held off. But the moment I moved into my new place? First order of business: adopt a cat.

Buying an animal never even crossed my mind. I have always wanted to give a loving home to someone who needed one. So, when Animal Humane Society popped up on my Instagram — hello, algorithm — I saw this tiny little face named Dora. Ten minutes later, I was speed-walking out of work and driving to Coon Rapids like a woman on a mission.

Now, Dora goes by Regina Phalange (yes, I’m a Friends fanatic), and just two days after meeting her, she moved in. One week later, she has taken over the house, my heart, and everyone who steps through my door. I am just her unpaid assistant at this point. And it’s the best job ever!

After the loss of our sweetest boy, Buddy (adopted from Animal Humane Society in Jan 2014) last December we started to “look” at dogs back in March - we missed having a dog more than I ever imagined we would. We saw Saint (now Scout!) listed at the Golden Valley location for a week or two and finally decided to meet his sweet face in person. The kids and I came to visit on a Friday afternoon and then brought my husband back on Friday evening. We put down our hold deposit and agreed to talk about what it means to get another dog and make a final decision on Saturday. The only thing we really talked about was what we wanted to re-name him when we picked him up the following day!

On March 15th when we left with Scout he was terrified to get into the car and shook the entire way home. When we finally coaxed him back out of the car at home, we brought him to the big back yard to run free, you just knew he understood the car ride was totally worth it! He ran, and ran, and ran. He crashed that night in our bed and slept for hours - a lot quieter night than he’s had in months, I’m sure.

Scout has fit right in where our Buddy left us! He loves eating early in the morning and heading out to the backyard to “hunt” critters. He loves treats. He loves snuggling on the couch with a blanket for some TV. He loves dog beds. He loves tearing toys to shreds. He now LOVES car rides (his favorite!). He loved puppy obedience training. He loves going to Chuck and Don’s and Home Depot. He loves going to the off leash dog park - he is so good with other dogs and humans. And to close his days, he loves sleeping in a king sized bed with Kim and dad.

He is a good boy and we absolutely love him! Thank you, AHS for another best friend!🐾 Heather

In this 1971 letter written to the editor of the Law School's newsletter, Gut Reaction, student Jack Baker praises advertisements for that year's Barrister's Ball that defined a couple as "any two people."

Baker ('72) and his husband, Michael McConnell, were the first gay couple to be legally married in the United States in September of 1971.
