FAQ about leeches

Please read before you ask about my pet leeches! If these don’t answer your q, send away!

You have leeches???

Actually, not at the moment. But I used to! You can search my blog for “the squish squad” to see pics and videos of them!

How many leeches do you have/what are their names/how do you tell them apart?

The Squish Squad originally consisted of five leeches named Squish Baby, Chungus, Burrito, Chocolate Chip and Wormitha. Over the years they have all passed on, with the last one dying of natural causes in March 2025. I could tell them apart by their different colors, patterns, and sizes.

What species are your leeches?

They’re H. verbana, one of three species of European medicinal leeches.

How do you feed your leeches?

I usually feed them on myself. They latch on, take roughly 30 mins to feed, and then drop off.

How often do you feed your leeches?

Roughly once every 4-6 months is best, but they can go up to a year between meals!

Does it hurt to let a leech feed on you?

The initial bite feels like pinpricks. It’s equivalent to/slightly less painful than a flu shot. Once the leech has broken the skin and starts feeding, their natural anesthetic kicks in and it usually doesn’t hurt after that.

Are there any negative effects from letting leeches feed on you?

The main side effect is bleeding. They have a very powerful anticoagulant in their saliva that will keep blood flowing to the bite for 10-12 hours. But it will leave your system on its own and the bleeding will stop after the first day. Other possible side effects are allergic reactions and infections, but they are rarely seen in medicinal leeches.

Isn’t letting leeches feed on you dangerous?

Not when they’re a domestic species that’s been bred in captivity. Mine were purchased from a responsible breeder and were given a specific diet to minimize chances of infection/disease. Don’t ever just plop a wild leech on you and expect the same results as a captive-raised medicinal leech!

How do you keep your leeches from having babies?

Leeches only lay their eggs on land, so keeping them in an all-water enclosure will prevent them from reproducing. They will simply reabsorb their eggs, which doesn’t hurt them, and is actually much less energetically costly than laying eggs would be.

Where did you get your leeches?

Heavily considering making a cigarette toy for one of my cats. Do you know what a good material for the exterior would be? I feel like you've made cat toys before

I have zero knowledge about this but have a Bob as a consolation prize

Ugh. Bored on campus because I wanna look for frogs at the ponds, but they probably won't come out until dusk, in 2.5 hours

They might still be out during the day, just not yelling yet!

If you can find audio of your local frog species and have a loud enough speaker, they will often respond to playbacks. Or you can do what I do and work on perfecting your local frog's calls so that you can just imitate them and they call back.

I love that this is just something every frog biologist I know does. There's absolutely no one like frog people for just busting out with animal vocalizations at the seminar table to make a point, and I did my PhD on vocal communication, okay, I know.

100% of us. I really want to host a competition at the next herpetology conference I go to to see who can most closely match the bioacoustic parameters of their chosen frog species.

I have a curiosity question about your self published book- did you have to pay up front any costs?

Was just talking about it in general and thought I would ask a reliable source.

Publishing itself should always be free but you would have to pay for an editor, cover, and marketing. If you decide to print physical books you may also have to pay printing costs. But yeah reputable publishers aren’t going to ask you to pay just to get your book out, anyone asking for money up-front is sketchy at best and a scam at worst.

It’s Moon Snail Mtuesday reblog to pass him to your followers

[ID: Two pictures of a moon snail that's sitting on a hand, almost completely engulfing it with its body. It looks wet and slimy.]

fell down a rabbit hole last night googling scary water stuff (as you do) and came across this website which just posts about cave diving accidents. absolutely terrifying. I’m hooked. my biggest takeaway so far is that Florida has far too many scary waters and caves and I don’t think that should be allowed (also the uk but we already knew that with the Strid being there) here’s the link for anyone who’s interested: https://cavedivingaccident.com
