Construites par Victor Baltard (1805-1874), entre 1857 et 1874, les Halles de Paris, sous ces structures de fer, approvisionnent la capitale en viande, poisson, œufs, fromages, fleurs… Trop à l’étroit pour alimenter une population croissante, le Ventre de Paris est détruit en 1973. Un pavillon est reconstruit à Nogent-sur-Marne et un deuxième à Yokohama au Japon.
