The scene where Sarah kills rent-a-cop Jim is phenomenal.

Sarah doesn’t like killing, that’s something the game shows us time and time again, but she doesn’t hesitate to kill Jim. Jim killed her co-workers, her friends, because they ‘couldn’t take the risk’ of them going to grab their loved ones to bring to a safe location, So what does she do? She tells him ‘they can’t take the risk’ and shoots him in the head with no hesitation

Deacon doesn’t know how to react to what he just saw, this is the first time he sees Sarah do something like this and you can see he doesn’t know what to do. My favorite part about that? Deacon would’ve done the same thing, and I think that’s part of the reason he doesn’t know how to react. This is the first time he witnesses someone pull a move he would’ve done

This is my favorite shot in all of Days Gone. The distance between Deacon and Iron Mike, showing how different their approaches are. Iron Mike being closer to the light while Deacon’s in the dark, showing Iron Mike’s pacifism and aversion to violence while Deacon’s in the dark because he leans into the violence. The bodies being in the foreground is an important part of the shot, it draws your eyes to them, showing the carnage not caring can do. The perpetrators of violence stay in the background, even if they don’t experience any outward consequences of their actions their violence is something that they’ll always have to deal with

The kicker? This is visual proof Deacon can change, Iron Mike was like Deacon, all of the bodies in this room came from Iron Mike’s lack of care and disregard for other people. But, deep down, Deacon’s always been soft and it shows with how he interacts with survivors, even back in Act 1.

Iron Mike’s relationship with Deacon is just so fascinating to me. He clearly cares about Deacon a whole lot, he wants Deacon to change, to get better, but he’s not gonna hold his breath waiting for it to happen. He kicks Deacon out of Lost Lake twice and lets him come back, not because he’s not a man of his word but because he cares about Deacon.

This shot is only on screen for like- 2 seconds

The game opens with Deacon having to make a choice between joining Sarah or staying with Boozer and Deacon chose to stay with Boozer - in his mind, Sarah was safe. She was with NERO, she was evacuating, she was going to receive medical attention, she was safe and Boozer was not, so he chose to stay to help Boozer

In the middle of game Deacon has to make the same choice but circumstances have changed, Boozer is the one that’s safe. Lost Lake is safe, he has Rikki and Addy, he has Jack, and Deacon has no clue what happened to Sarah

I think the one of the best parts about this parallel is how both Sarah and Boozer understand Deacon’s choice. The three of them are so important to eachother and I think the writers did a wonderful job at showing that to us
