Chests were one of the most exported Namban items during this period (V&A). This particular coffer, or chest, is an interesting and somewhat different item from the other chests, due to the nature of the pearl work on the exterior. It resembles fish scales, and takes its influence more from Chinese and Korean traditions than original Japanese pearl work (V&A).
