one thing that's so goated about the Newsreader is that no matter what Dale and Helen are going through personally the show inevitably reminds them (and the audience) that they're still white with the capacity for racism and it's inexcusable. for all the ways they're marginalised for gender, sexuality, mental health, etc - for example - neither of them respect Noelene properly, Helen is shitty and disrespectful to her Aboriginal contacts and Dale is racist to Dennis and doesn't stick up for Indigenous news stories. And the show doesn't forgive either of them for it or let them off the hook because they're going through their own shit. At the end of the day, they're still white and racist in a white racist institution and the show isn't afraid to tell you that. As an Aboriginal viewer and fan, I actually cannot express how important it is to me for an Australian show to have two very loved white protagonists (played by two very beloved white Australian actors) who, regardless of their intentions and struggles, are shown to do irreparable harm to Aboriginal peoples because of their carelessness. because honestly that is my experience too, that even white people with the best intentions and marginalisations of their own can and will fuck you over. Not only does it make Helen and Dale feel so much realer as characters to me, but it's also an extremely important point to make that the news is filtered through the perspectives of people who simply won't deal with their own capacity and complicity in racism. Especially racism against Aboriginal peoples. Best show 🥰
