Mary Cotton was the daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir George Cotton.1 She married, secondly, Henry Grey, 6th Earl of Kent, son of Henry Grey and Margaret St. John.1 She married, firstly, Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby, son of Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby and Anne Hastings, before 1 January 1561/62.1 She died on 16 November 1580, without issue.1
After her marriage, Mary Cotton was styled as Countess of Derby. Her married name became Grey.1 From before 1 January 1561/62, her married name became Stanley.1

Sir Robert Laurie of Maxwelton, 1st Bt. was born on 7 September 1628. He was the son of John Laurie of Maxwelton and Agnes Grierson.1,2 He married, firstly, Mary Dalzell, daughter of Sir Robert Dalzell, 1st Bt. and Catherine Sandilands, circa 21 April 1652.3 He married, secondly, Jean Riddell, daughter of Walter Riddell of Minto and Catherine Nisbet, on 27 July 1674 at Tron Kirk, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He died in April 1698 at age 69.1
He was also known as Robert Lawrie.3 He was appointed Knight on 21 March 1685 by King James II.2 He was created 1st Baronet Laurie, of Maxwelton, co. Dumfries [Nova Scotia] on 27 March 1685.1 He lived at Maxwelton, ScotlandG.3

John Laurie of Maxwelton was baptised on 21 September 1609 at Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, ScotlandG.2 He was the son of Stephen Laurie and Marion Corsane.3,4 A contract for the marriage of John Laurie of Maxwelton and Agnes Grierson was signed on 20 November 1630.1,2 He died in 1672.3
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries Sheriffdom [Scotland] in 1643.3 He was a Covenanter, and was fined £3,600 for non-conformity.4 He lived at Maxwelton, Dumfries-shire, ScotlandG.3 He had four younger sons and two daughters.4

Stephen Laurie married Marion Corsane, daughter of John Corsane and Janet Maxwell.2 He died on 14 December 1637.1
In 1611 he purchased the estate of Maxwelton from the Earls of Glencairn, "having distinguished himself by his loyalty in these troubled times."1 He lived at Dumfries-shire, Scotland.2
