Thomas William Bowlby was born on 7 January 1818 at GibraltarG.1,2 He was the son of Captain Thomas Bowlby and Williamina Martha Arnold Balfour.1 He married Frances Marion Mein, daughter of Pulteney Mein, on 23 September 1848. He died on 22 September 1860 at age 42 at ChinaG, as a result of ill-treatment he received while a prisoner of the Tartar general, San-ko-lin-sin.2 He was buried on 17 October 1860 at Russian Cemetery, An-tin Gate, Peking, ChinaG.2

Captain Thomas Bowlby was born on 17 February 1790.1 He was the son of Reverend Thomas Bowlby and Eleanora Elizabeth Salvin.1 He married, firstly, Williamina Martha Arnold Balfour, daughter of Maj.-Gen. William Balfour, on 1 February 1817.1 He married, secondly, Margaret Matilda Mein, daughter of Pulteney Mein, on 24 August 1835.1 He died on 11 August 1842 at age 52.1
