     Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, 1st Bt. was born circa 1635.1 He was the son of William Maxwell and Margaret McCulloch.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Hay, daughter of Thomas Hay of Park and Margaret Kennedy.2 He married, firstly, Joanna McDouall, daughter of Patrick McDouall of Logan.2 He died in April 1709.1
     He was created 1st Baronet Maxwell, of Monreith, co. Wigtown [Nova Scotia] on 8 January 1680/81.1
