Clothing racks can be a storage solution for your small closet space or act as a base for your most-loved wardrobe pieces you want to have on display. They also make an excellent entryway coat hook station; some even have shelving to replace your shoe rack.
Whether you’re investing in a clothes rack for aesthetic purposes or need the most large and strong option to hold your winter coats, we’ve tested almost every design style you can think of at The Lab, including a metal rack on wheels with a 200-pound shelving capacity, and a gorgeous dual-material one made of bamboo and steel that’s perfect for lighter hanging. We even added 10-pound weights in tote bags to evaluate each rack’s durability and weight capacity.
That said, our tested guide includes a clothing rack for every lifestyle and design preference. None of our picks—ranging from $30 to $300—feel like they’d tip, wobble, or break.
Best Overall
Brabantia Linn Large White Clothes Rack
Comes in multiple sizes and colors
Fairly easy to set up and take apart as needed
Long-lasting, beautiful design
Wire shelves can only hold light items
Doesn't have wheels
Out of all the clothing racks we tested, the Brabantia Linn Large Clothes Rack is our favorite. It's a long-lasting, stylish, and spacious piece that you can purchase in three different sizes (small, large, and compact) and in two different colors (white or black).
We tested the large, white version in the lab, and found it to be very simple and pretty. The aesthetic design can easily complement your belongings (your clothes, your shoes, and a handbag or two) and make them into a true centerpiece of your home.
Since our original test, our editor has owned and used this clothes rack in her own home for three years. In that timeframe, it's survived moving, and being disassembled and reassembled multiple times. Initially, setting up this rack took about 45 minutes, and if you have any experience assembling furniture, following along with the instruction manual may not be too difficult. However, you do need to be very careful when lifting the rod above your head and placing the bars in their connection points prior to adding the screws.
What Our Editor Says
"This clothing rack has a fairly permanent spot in the corner of my bedroom, which is pretty spacious. It's been the perfect home for my coats, duffel bags, and shoe boxes, and keeps my closet from being too jam-packed—plus, it's truly stunning in real life." —Marisa Viglione, senior editor
Once set up, this rack is exceptionally sturdy. The bamboo rod could withstand two, 10-pound bags just fine, which is close to the manual's listed weight limit of 22 pounds (though, this limit is more restrictive than the other options we tested). The wire shelves—which you can set to your desired height—did bend a little bit and proved not to be suitable for heavy items. Placing shoes on the shelves seems to be alright; however, storing a clothes steamer and magazines on the bottom shelf resulted in some sagging.

In addition, the rack doesn't come with wheels, so you'll want to set it up in your desired location, or as closely as possible. It's relatively easy to slide around on a carpeted floor, but the bulky design means it doesn't easily slide through a doorway.
The large version is definitely that—large. So, if you have a smaller living space or want to put this piece in an entryway to stash backpacks, coats, and bags, consider opting for the small version which still features two shelves, or the compact version that has one solid shelf near the base.

Simple Houseware Standard Rod Garment Rack
Adjustable rod
Very strong and durable design
Comes in different configurations and colors
Minimal compared to other options
While this Simple Houseware Garment Rack isn't the fanciest or most spacious on the market, it has the basics to ensure you can hang up your favorite pieces, and the bonus of an extendable rod for added space. Given the lower price tag, we weren't sure what to expect from its durability, but we found it to be really strong. It sports a weight limit of 250 pounds, which is way more than the two, 10-pound bags we tested it with.
Compared to other clothing racks, the setup process for this product was fairly simple, especially because the necessary tools were provided. (We do wish the pieces were labeled, though, because the metal rods all looked very similar.) We were able to easily roll the rack on its wheels from a rug to a hard floor without fear of it tipping over.
The downside of this rack is its lack of different storage options. The whole rack is quite minimal; one rod and one bottom shelf isn't ideal if you're hoping to store your entire closet. But, along with silver, it's also offered in both black and white finishes, so you can at least match it with your decor.

We think the Simple Houseware Standard Rod Garment Rack would be a particularly great option for holding outfits for a photo shoot (you know, when you want to show off your latest purchases on Instagram or TikTok), in addition to the more traditional uses for a clothing rack in your home. It may even be suitable for displaying outfits you don't wear often, or pop-up shops that are constantly on-the-go with their clothes rack.
Several other rod configurations are also available if you want to spend a few more dollars for added storage space. Ultimately, what sets this pick apart from our overall best—other than its price point—is its simpler but functional design, and its wheels.

Best With Wheels
Honey-Can-Do Chrome Rolling Clothing Rack
Very durable and strong design
Wheels moved smoothly
Good option for laundry rooms and storage spaces as well
Instructions were just a photo
Pieces are pretty heavy and hard to adjust
The Honey-Can-Do Chrome Rolling Clothing Rack was our favorite rolling rack from our testing. Along with the convenience of its wheels, its design includes three shelves and one rod for maximum storage. The rod held up particularly well in the face of the 10-pound bags. The brand lists a 50-pound weight capacity for the bar, and 200 pounds for each shelf, which bodes well for its overall durability.
The chrome finish on the rack (similar to that of our best value pick) definitely makes it look more utilitarian in person, but we think this aesthetic makes it the perfect option for a garage, laundry room, or basement storage room. This could even be a good rack for an office.
The wheels transitioned from a rug to a hard floor with ease. Aside from pieces from your closet, you could load it up with big boxes of snacks, bottles of laundry detergent, or multiple baskets of clothes—you name it.

It's worth noting that the instructions for this rack were just a photo. There are several pieces and parts, all of which are pretty heavy, so more detailed instructions would be helpful to ensure a speedier assembly process. The rack is adjustable, but we found the parts a bit hard to move, given their weight.
Lastly, the rack is quite tall, so you'll want to make sure you have enough space in your room for it before adding it to your cart. Like with our best overall pick, the large dimensions really come to life in person.

Best for Small Spaces
Yamazaki Home Freestanding Steel & Wood Hanger
Very quick assembly process
Surprisingly durable
Good option for bedroom or entryway as well
No instructions to follow
Doesn't have wheels
Creating storage in a small space is no problem with the help of the Yamazaki Home Freestanding Steel & Wood Hanger. This more compact option can comfortably fit one or two outfits on its single rod and a pair of shoes on its bottom shelf. You can also hang items off its top corners, if you're hoping to show off a hat or bag, similar to a coat rack.
The items we tested the rack with—including a jacket, sweater, pair of pants, vest, shoes, and more—fit nicely, and the rack proved to be lightweight and easy to move, despite not having wheels.
The assembly process was a breeze, as well, only taking about five minutes. This was a major departure from all the other racks we tested, which took an average of 30 minutes to set up. Plus, we set it up that quickly despite not having clear instructions.

Despite being lightweight, we found this aesthetic clothing rack to be surprisingly very durable, too. The rod didn't show any major signs of distress when we applied the 10-pound bags. At the end of the day, we think it would be a great option for an entryway or a bedroom, where you might just display or hang a few items at a time. It wouldn't make a good substitute for a closet or dresser.
Like other options, you can shop it in black or white, depending on the style of your space and your personal preference. And if you're going between this rack and the compact version of our overall best, know that this one is a bit wider and about $50 less in comparison; otherwise, it's incredibly similar.

Best Bamboo
Costway 2-Tier Bamboo Garment Rack
Bottom shelf has wide slats for shoes
Comes with a tipping kit for adhering it to the wall
Good option for nursery or kid's room
Longer dresses don't fit well
Less durable than metal options
Unlike the rest of the racks we recommend that are made of metal, the Costway 2-Tier Bamboo Garment Rack is made of bamboo—and is also the only pick on our list that we haven't formally tested. That said, we've tested several other clothing racks made of this material, including the Urban Outfitters Levy Clothing Rack (which is, sadly, no longer available).
Once assembled, a bamboo clothing rack like this one can look beautiful and provide you with all kinds of space for storing your favorite pieces. In particular, we love that this Costway rack has both upper and lower shelves. The lower shelf has some wide slats and a 66-pound weight limit, so you can comfortably store shoes without fearing that they'll fall through. The top shelf has a 33-pound weight limit, making it great for accessories, hats, or a small stack of tees.
Our Testing Takeaways
First, bamboo doesn't have the same durability and strength as metal, so bamboo clothing racks are a great option for lighter collections of clothes, or even a nursery where you might hang up a few dozen onesies and baby outfits.
Second, bamboo clothing racks can be more difficult to assemble. In our experience, assembling a bamboo rack is easier with an extra set of hands that can hold the pieces at the right angle while you apply screws. It's also easy for the bamboo to split during assembly—again, it's not a very durable material—so, you'll want to handle the pieces and parts with care.
The only thing you can't really store on this clothing rack, beyond heavier items that could make the rod sag, is longer dresses. The lower shelf gets in the way, but you can always fold your dresses over a clothes hanger like you would a pair of pants.
At 12 pounds, this pick also isn't the lightest or the heaviest of our list; it would be easy to move as needed but also can firmly be affixed to your wall with help from the included tipping kit. If you plan on using this piece as a makeshift closet in a nursery or kid's room, we definitely recommend using the included tipping kit to secure it to the wall.

Final Verdict
The best clothing rack is the Brabantia Linn Large Clothes Rack, which comes in three sizes and two colors, and has a long-lasting and beautiful design. One of our editors has owned it for three years now, and it's been fairly easy to take apart and assemble as needed. The Simple Houseware Standard Rod Garment Rack is another great, value-packed option. While it's not as spacious, it features an adjustable rod and has an impressive weight limit of 250 pounds.
How We Tested the Clothing Racks
We purchased and tested 11 clothing racks side-by-side in The Lab to find the very best options for your space—whether you're looking to expand your closet, makeshift a closet, or something unique and different entirely.
Each clothing rack was rated for its durability, design, and setup. We noted whether they required a two-person assembly. We also evaluated their organization features, noting any rods, shelves, coat hooks, or knobs.
Finally, we took our entire experience into account when judging the overall value of each rack. We compared our experience to that of other racks we tested to find the best of the best.

What to Look for in a Clothing Rack
The Listed Size and Weight Limit
There are tall, wide, and compact clothing racks on the market to suit a wide variety of needs. We highly recommend measuring the space you plan to put your rack and making sure the size of your potential purchase aligns.
If you're looking to add a clothing rack to your bedroom because you don't have a traditional closet, then you may want a rack that's larger. If you want to add a rack to your entryway to hang up jackets on your way in the door, then you may want a tinier pick that you can tuck into a corner, such as our best for small spaces pick, the Yamazaki Home Freestanding Steel & Wood Hanger.
The Option to Adjust the Rack
If you're not sure how much space you'll need to store your belongings, or you plan on moving and bringing the rack with you to a new place, an adjustable design is well-worth considering. Our best value pick, the Simple Houseware Standard Rod Garment Rack, offers this feature.
In our experience, adjustable racks, like the Honey-Can-Do Chrome Rolling Clothing Rack (our best with wheels pick) aren't always easy to adjust, though. Sometimes, the parts can be kind of sticky or heavy. However, having the option to extend a rod or raise a shelf does make your clothing rack more flexible, and you might only adjust the piece once.
The Rack's Capacity
Often listed as the weight limit or weight capacity on a product page or in a product description, you'll find lots of variety in this category. Some racks are intended for lighter lifts, and some are clearly designed to be more heavy-duty—and size doesn't always align with strength.
Our top pick, for example, the Brabantia Linn Large Clothes Rack, is quite large in person. Its shelves would sag when we placed small stacks of magazines on them, though.
Your Organization Options—And What Material They're Made Of
Clothing racks will always include at least one rod for hanging up your belongings. However, you may also find racks with one or multiple shelves, and knobs or hooks for hanging hats and bags. When you are shopping, think about what you plan to put on the rack, to ensure the rack has the right features and versatility to suit your needs.
Katie Berry, a member of The Spruce's Cleaning Review Board, says racks with shelves—in addition to giving you more flexible storage options—tend to be sturdier as a whole. She also notes that if you have young children in your household, it's essential to look for a clothing rack that you can secure to the wall to prevent tipping.
Our Testing Takeaways
A single, flimsy rod will not be suitable for a stack of heavy coats, even if it's long and generally spacious. The Honey-Can Do Chrome Rolling Rack, our best with wheels pick, is a great example of a very smart design that includes both upper and lower shelves, a standard rod, and room to add your own S-hooks, if the mood strikes.

Rolling Wheels
Wheels are a feature you can find on some clothing racks, but not all. On our list, just two picks have them. During testing, we considered the design of each rack, and for the ones that had wheels, we noted whether they moved smoothly from one surface to the next.
When durably made, wheels are a great feature to consider if you plan on moving your belongings around your space often or are using the rack in a photo shoot or pop-up shop situation, since they make the rack a lot more portable. Some wheels may be flimsy or unreliable, so keep an eye out for reviews of smooth-gliding and easy-to-use wheels.

The Checkout Counter
Before you check out, consider adding these other items to your cart that could help you style and set up your clothing rack.
- AmazonBasics Slim Velvet Hangers: You'll most likely need a pack of sturdy hangers and these are a Spruce favorite. They're made out of a non-slip velvet material with a metal core that's strong enough to hold up to 10 pounds at a time.
- Better Homes & Gardens Woven Rope Storage Basket: A woven basket is the perfect add-on to clothing racks with shelving. You can store your shoes, slippers, or scarves right above or below your outerwear—depending on where that shelving is located.
