在尋找綱手的過程中，遇到目的是九尾妖狐的「曉」的成員內輪鼬太知與干柿鬼鮫，而鼬太知是屠殺內輪一族的兇手，佐助遇到鼬太知想要為一族復仇不成反被打成重傷。對此感到無力的佐助離開村子而前去找大蛇丸尋求能殺死鼬太知的力量。在佐助離開村子時阿櫻前去處阻止卻被打暈，鋼手從阿櫻得知事情經過後派出包含鳴門在內的五名忍者找回佐助，但是鳴門最後還是無法奪回佐助。從此第七班名存實亡，鳴門與阿櫻只能被迫與其他班合作完成任務。但鳴門與阿櫻還是不放棄佐助。為了能將佐助帶回木之葉忍村，鳴門成為自來也的徒弟，而阿櫻則成為綱手的徒弟。
在經歷一連串的任務後，自來也終於同意訓練鳴門。最後鳴門與自來也一起離開木之葉忍村，踏上修行之路。
