Three Girls, by Kreh Mellick

2014, gouache on paper, 21" x 22"

Private Collection

Kreh Mellick writes:

All of my drawings tell a story and stem from a deep love of illustration's storytelling power. Ghosts, folklore, and memory commingle in my work. The red motifs come from my great grandmother's sketchbooks; she painted traditional Pennsylvania-Dutch decorations for tins, chairs, and glass paintings that I continue to adapt and expand, creating atmospheres for my figures to inhabit. In pattern, in creating patterns that become havens for my figures, I reference the past in the hope of connecting to the women who came before me.

Kreh Mellick received a BFA from Maine College of Art in Illustration and Drawing. Drawing has continued to be the most direct way for Mellick to tell a story that can be hard to relate using words. She currently lives in the artist community surrounding Penland School of Crafts in Penland, North Carolina. Mellick keeps studio and pursues exhibition and residency both home and abroad.
