From Proto-Italic *gʷīwos, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷih₃wós (“alive”), from *gʷeyh₃- (“to live”) + *-wós (whence Latin -vus). Cognate with Sanskrit जीव (jīva), Gothic 𐌵𐌹𐌿𐍃 (qius) and Ancient Greek βίος (bíos).
