From Middle High German drinken, northern form of trinken, from Proto-Germanic *drinkaną.
As in the rhyming strong verbs sénken and sténken, the [e]-vowel was generalized from the second and third persons singular (instead of expected [ɑ] as in fannen, schwammen, etc.). For the fact that nk as such does not prevent the lowering see Fank, Schank.
