From Middle Dutch gewelt, influenced by umlauted geweldich (modern geweldig), from Old Dutch giwalt, ultimately pertaining to Proto-West Germanic *ga- and *waldōn (“to govern, rule”). Cognate with English wald, German Gewalt.
