jacht

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary
From Middle Dutch jacht, jaecht, jaget, from Old Dutch *jagot, from Proto-West Germanic *jagōþu (“hunt, hunting”). Equivalent to jagen (“to hunt”) + -t (“verbal noun”). Cognate with German Jagd. The form jaecht is due to contraction and jacht to subsequent pre-cluster shortening. (Compare maagd, in which an analogous development was probably hindered by the potential homophone macht.)
jacht f (uncountable)
Probably a shortening of jachtschip, from jacht (“hunt”) or jachten (“to hurry”) + schip (“ship”). Ultimately from etymology 1.
jacht n (plural jachten, diminutive jachtje n)
See the etymology of the corresponding lemma form.
