Etymology 1
Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀁𑀢 (maṃta)), an extension of Sanskrit मा (mā), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁. Cognate to Punjabi ਮਤ (mat).

Usage notes
मत (mat) is the imperative negation and it is only used with verbs which are in the imperative mood.
Compare the subjunctive negations न (na) and ना (nā) which are only used with verbs in subjunctive mood and the indicative negation नहीं (nahī̃) which is used with verbs in indicative mood.
