     Yīngwǔ néng yán, bù lí fēiniǎo; xīngxīng néng yán, bù lí qínshòu. Jīn rén ér wú lǐ, suī néng yán, bù yì qínshòu zhī xīn hū? Fū wéi qínshòu wú lǐ, gù fùzǐ jùyōu. Shìgù shèngrén zuò wéi lǐ yǐ jiào rén. Shǐ rén yǐ yǒu lǐ zhī zì bié yú qínshòu. [Pinyin]

     The parrot can speak, but is no more than a bird. The gibbon can speak, but is no more than a beast. Now, if a person lacks propriety, even if they can speak, are they not also of a beastly mind? Only beasts lack propriety, which is why their sires and offspring share the same female. Therefore the sages devised propriety to teach people, and to make people know to distinguish themselves from the beasts by the possession of propriety.
