This is a Metropolitan Police Box situated somewhere in Hammersith circa 1948. This is a rather battered example despite being constructed of pre cast reinforced concrete although the door was made of Teak. The idea of a Police Box was an American one from the late 19th Century. A police box, used in the United Kingdom throughout the 20th century, is a public telephone kiosk or callbox for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone was located behind a hinged door so it could be used from the outside, and the interior of the box was, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers to read and fill in reports, take meal breaks and even temporarily hold prisoners…

Dorset Police have erected the newly-built 10ft-tall police phone box - complete with a blue flashing light on top - in a shopping precinct in Boscombe, Bournemouth, where members of the public can go to talk to officers.
