In 1818 near Russellville, Pennsylvania-born iron worker Joseph Heslip & Tennessee businessmen Thomas Ramsey & Jenkin Whiteside built Alabama's first iron furnace. It produced pig iron--a rough, brittle material made malleable by more forging--for north Alabama blacksmiths, plus cooking vessels, pots & cranes. Some of the iron was exported to England, selling there for $100 per ton. Today, nothing remains of the furnace or on-site forge.
