Firstly, there are generally two main types of cucumbers grown here in the UK ‘greenhouse’ or indoor cucumbers and outdoor or ‘ridge’ types.

I mainly grow greenhouse cucumbers that need plenty of heat, so need to be grown in a greenhouse or poly tunnel. They are large plants that produce long, smooth fruits that need to be pruned to to ensure they are manageable and healthy.

They do not need pollinating and the male flowers need to be removed to prevent this happening or the fruits will end up being very bitter.

I grow an all female variety called ‘Passandra’ to ensure this doesn’t happen as they are much easier when growing at scale, so there’s no need to remove any flowers.
