Inside a vintage Dior garment. From the inside, you can just barely see the tiny hand stitching that secures the zipper, the lining, and the sleeve lining. The small lingerie guard keeps straps discreetly and securely in place. A closer look and the hand-sewn zipper insertion. The seam edges have a silk organza Hong Kong seam finish. All of the raw seam edges are hand-overcast, and the zipper bottom is left free, to eliminate any possible puckering.

Learn four hand stitches that are utilized by couture seamstresses, including the backstitch, the running stitch, the catch stitch and hand overcasting.

Then trim away the excess fleece on the garment side close to the stitching. Do not attempt to press this seam. Just turn the seam allowances towards the sleeve. I’ve used this technique on virtually every jacket and coat that I’ve made since learning it. I much prefer it to using a sleeve head, which it replaces.
