"Cheer-up! Cheer-up! " chirps my sparrow,
hopping on my window sill;
She takes the path, straight and narrow,
peering at me through iron grill.
She nods her head in understanding,
Wise, dark eyes alight with care;
All my woes that are demanding
to fold her wings in fervent prayer.
For her, a scattering of crumbly cakes,
a cup of ginger tea for me;
My kitchen glows as my heart awakes,
in our cheerful company.
Then, "Cheer-up! Cheer-up! " she chirps goodbye,
and reaches for the bright blue sky.
