Technical Excellence

Spirit was founded by my wife, Erica, a mathematician who returned to Oxford in her 30’s to complete a Masters on the maximization of photon capture by solar panels. What she was doing going back to University when she was pregnant with our third child, I have no idea. Anyway, the maths taught her that a well-designed and well-installed solar system will generate a considerably superior return on investment compared to one where insufficient attention has been applied to the design details. That ethos continues today with Spirit’s commitment to recruiting the finest graduates and installers and providing them with the best in-house technical training that the industry can offer… regardless of the cost…

Thought Leaders in the Solar industry

After a famous clash with Prime Minister David Cameron, Erica became a thought leader and activist for the solar industry in the UK. She hated the publicity, it’s not her style at all (she once refused to be the subject of The Sunday Times’ “How I made it” column…. even thought it would have been great publicity for the business…), but it did mean that Spirit has became a key partner to many of the major product suppliers in the industry.  Which doesn’t mean we’re tied to any particular product brand; we work in a fast evolving industry and we make it our mission to stay ahead of technical developments so that we can make the best choices about which products to recommend to our customers… even though those products are rarely the ones we could make most money from…

An elite team of in-house installers

When I asked Justin Parsons,  Head of Installations at Spirit for 10 years, why he has to visit personally the vast majority of customers before installation, he told me that it’s because at Spirit we put the customers first and the bottom line would just have to look after itself. And apparently the reason we don’t subcontract any of our on-site electrical and roof work is also because we put the customers first and the bottom line will just have to look after itself…

Compliance, compliance, compliance

Health and Safety, British Standards, Building Regulations…

Our industry is all about compliance. Compliance with Health & Safety legislation, compliance with Building Regulations, compliance with design and installation standards, from Emergency Lighting to G59, compliance with the requirements of export tariffs…

We are committed to ensuring that we stay up-to-date with all relevant standards, regulations and best practice. Where we do not have in-house expertise, we have built up long-standing relationships with partners who do – for example structural engineers and EPC consultants.
Fully accredited under MCS and RECC
We are accredited installers under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. You need to use an accredited installer to be eligible for any present or future tariff payments.
