Article by : Erik Gibbs Jun 18, 2024

In May 2024, West Virginia’s online casinos continued to perform well, generating $17.9 million in revenue. This figure represents a marginal increase of 0.007% from the previous month, following an exceptional record-breaking month in March, which saw revenues peak at $20.68 million.

Despite not matching the heights of March, May 2024’s revenue stands as the second-highest monthly revenue in the history of West Virginia online casinos, underscoring the robustness of the industry.

A detailed breakdown of the online casino revenue for May 2024 shows that Hollywood Charles Town, operating under DraftKings Casino WV, led the market with $7,408,289 in revenue, contributing $1,111,243 in taxes.

Following closely was Greenbrier, which includes BetMGM Casino WV and FanDuel Casino WV, reporting $6,427,087 in revenue and $964,063 in tax contributions. Mountaineer generated $3,398,873 in revenue and contributed $509,831 in taxes, while Mardi Gras reported $698,033 in revenue with a tax contribution of $104,705.

In total, the online casino sector generated $17,932,282 in revenue and paid $2,689,842 in taxes for the month.

The online casino industry in West Virginia, now in its fourth year, has established a strong footing in 2024. Although the revenues in April and May did not surpass the peak experienced in March, these months remain among the highest revenue-generating periods in the state’s iGaming history, reflecting the sector’s growing stability and consumer engagement.

In parallel, the sports betting sector in West Virginia recorded $3.7 million in revenue from a total of $32.95 million in bets placed during May 2024. This translates to a hold of 11.2%, which is an improvement from the 10.2% hold observed in April, despite a slight decrease in revenue month-over-month.

The competition for the top sportsbook licensee in the state remains intense, particularly between Hollywood Charles Town and Greenbrier.

Breaking down the sportsbook performance, Hollywood Charles Town, featuring DraftKings Sportsbook WV, ESPN Bet, and Fanatics, reported a handle of $14,923,345 and a revenue of $1,349,768, contributing $134,977 in taxes.

Greenbrier, with BetMGM Sportsbook WV and FanDuel Sportsbook WV, recorded a handle of $13,707,521, generating $2,012,621 in revenue and $201,262 in taxes. Mountaineer reported a handle of $2,665,267 with a revenue of $270,473, contributing $27,047 in taxes.

Wheeling Island had a handle of $1,061,109, resulting in $23,179 in revenue and $2,318 in taxes, while Mardi Gras, with a handle of $594,373, generated $51,576 in revenue and contributed $5,158 in taxes.
