Internet memes as intricate riddles

In a new open-access publication, Bryan Yazell and Anita Wohlmann elaborate on Internet memes as intricate riddles that require deep knowledge and a shared set of references to untangle. Based on teaching in SDU's English program, in which "Literature, Culture, & Media" bachelor students were asked to compose memes to express some of the knowledge and insights they (hopefully) picked up during the course, the paper considers the use of memes in the literature studies classroom. Can you use a meme to make an argument about Mary Shelley's Frankenstein? What about a meme evaluating a course as a whole?
